Thong Yee Camping, Resort, Khanom
It's not in the most obvious location, nor does it have a lot of signs or advertising to point the way, but this restaurant at the end of Thong Yee bay really is a spot worth seeking out. Sit in the covered restaurant amongst the fish tanks, or grab a seat under the nipa palm sala on the beach itself and soak in the scenery. The beach is white sand with a rocky point to the left and a tree-lined prominitory to the right, giving it the feel of a small, private bay.
The menu is only three pages, but the seafood is excellent and not too expensive unless you go for the giant mantis prawns at 400 baht. There are also facilities here for camping, but the owner keeps things very low key. Consequently he only offers tents for groups of people - no singles - and the tents that are available sleep up to 10 people. It might be worth a chance turning up here with your own tent and asking to pitch on the beach, but it's not something he openly offers.
It's no great surprise that big business is moving into this area, but the owner is adamant that he will not see this piece of land developed with a concrete resort as has happened further up the coast. Hopefully it will stay pretty much as it is for a while to come.
